Want to motivate your kids to read?

Need to find books your kids will LOVE?

Kids will want to read, and keep reading, if you keep them supplied with books they love.  This is important when they are learning to read, but even more important (and difficult) as they get older.  Here are some resources to help you keep your child reading books they love:

Resource #1: Your teacher!

Your teacher knows your child and can often suggest books they might love - just ask!  Don't forget the Pleasant Hill Library - they also have great suggestions of books students will enjoy.

Resource #2: The Palatine Library

The Palatine Library has lists of books, both on-line and at the library.  Examples of book lists found in the library include "If you liked Harry Potter, you will like these books too...".  Also - ask the librarian! They often have (or will make) personalized books lists for you.

Resource #3: AR (Accelerated Reader)

Since PTA has purchased access to the Internet version of Accelerated Reader, your child has access to all 110,000 AR tests. Some of these books are available at the Pleasant Hill Library, but many more can be found at the Palatine Library.  The  Search the Accelerated Reader list to see if your book has an AR test (and find the reading level).  Accelerated Reader also has an extensive list of popular kids books.

Resource #4: Common Sense Media

Concerned about the age-appropriateness of a book?  Don't have time to read it?  Search Common Sense Media to see if your book is age appropriate for your child.  Common Sense Media also has listings of books that are popular for kids:

TIP:  Let your KIDS browse these and come up with their OWN picks!  Less work for you, and they build valuable skills in finding their own reading material!

READING CONNECTION

The number one reason children select as to why they don't read more is because they aren't finding books they like to read."

"Parents think their children have too much homework, and that they like to do other things over reading. Having trouble finding books they like to read came in a distant third on the parents' list. This was an important finding in that parents don't realize what reason their kids give as to why they aren't reading more."

The man who doesn't read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them.
