Dear Pleasant Hill Parents & Guardians,
We'd like to thank everyone for their participation in the Run for Fun fundraising.  This event is critical for raising the majority of our funds to enable us to have a successful year.  If you still have fundraising forms to turn in - it is never too late!  We will provide the final statistics in the next issue of Pleasant Views.
Thank you also to everyone who has become a PTA member!  We are currently working on the PTA Family Directory and hope to have it to you by mid-October.  If you missed the deadline to turn in your form, fear not!  You can still become a member of the PTA and receive the ever so important directory.  However, your information will be included in the addendum copy of the directory distributed in January.  All you have to do is complete the membership form.
We'd also like to thank all those families who completed the volunteer form and are willing to dedicate their time to help with various events at school.  Sharing each of our talents builds a strong school environment.
One of our greatest needs is to find a person to replace our yearbook committee chair, Cathy Peterson.  As a parent of a 6th grader, Cathy is looking for a person(s) to shadow her this year with the intention of leading this committee by next school year.  The responsibility of yearbook has changed over the years due to the transition of print to digital photography, as well as, the addition of on-line photo books and school cameras.  In order for a smooth transition, it is critical to find someone to train by October 31.  This is a fabulous opportunity to ask a friend (or friends) to join you on this committee. If you are interested in learning more, please contact Cathy directly at 847-934-9735 or dcpeterson12@sbcglobal.net.

Make a Difference Club- Clothing Donations

Be a part of our fall and winter clothes drive for WINGS (Women In Need Growing Strong). This summer the WINGS store burned down in a terrible fire. Now they are opening a new store in Palatine.

Help get the WINGS store up and running. You can help by bringing clothes donations to school on October 7th  and 8th. Please have your donations washed and bagged.  You can bring your donations to your classroom on both days or drop them off at Moms and Munchies on the 8th of October.

Thank you for supporting the Make a Difference Club and WINGS!Please contact Laura Kometer if you have any questions (847) 991-9032.

5th & 6th Grade - Boys Only!
All 5th and 6th Grade boys and their father's (or other significant male adult) are invited to attend Pleasant Hill's 2nd annual health education event for boys.  The evening will focus on health education, proper nutrition, exercise, self-esteem and personal hygiene. The program is meant to help fathers open the lines of communication with their sons as the boys begin to experience adolescent changes. Our guest speaker comes from the Robert Crown Center for Health Education and will help young boys strengthen their confidence. We will combine facts and humor to make the sensitive topics easier to discuss.  The event will be held in the PH cafeteria on Thursday, November 11th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Please RSVP by November 5th.  For more info, contact Heath and Safety coordinators, Lisa Sammons at lsammons@comcast.net or Michelle Gattuso at michelle.gatuso@gmail.com

BoxTops and more...
Anyone who attempted to sign up for elabelsforeducation last year (around April) please contact me.  It appears that we didn't get any credit for those who signed up.  I'll need to know who tried so that we can try to get credit.

At this writing, the Boys vs. Girls contest is wrapping up:  Boys 1110; Girls 1669.  We'll see who "Rules" in the end.  See the collection poster near the front office for updates! Check for current contests, here.

Fall Fest - October 22nd
Come join us for the Pleasant Hill Fall Fest!

The festivities include games, music, pumpkin walk, book fair, the Reflections art gallery and lots of great food! All current Pleasant Hill students and their immediate families are invited. Please note all activities will be inside the school.  Your child was sent home with a flier on Friday with full details and order forms.  Follow the link in the left column if you need another copy.
Earth Club for 3rd & 4th Graders
It seems like everywhere you turn, people are talking about how we can become more earth-friendly.  If your 3rd or 4th grader would be interested in Earth Club, please fill out the form your child brought home and send it in with your child to their teacher.  We meet during your lunch recess once a month and do cool things that have to do with taking care of our earth.  If you did not receive a form, please use the link to the left.

See you soon!

Reflections
Start working on your Reflections Entries today! REFLECTIONS is a nationally sponsored PTA program that offers an opportunity for each child to create works of art for fun and recognition. Each child can participate in any of the six artistic categories: Literature, Musical Composition, Photography, Visual Arts, Dance Choreography, and Film Production.

This year's Reflections theme is "Together We Can..........."   Encourage your child to dream up a story, compose a musical piece, take a photograph, draw a picture, create a dance, or produce a film that conveys what this theme is to them.

All entries will be due on Wednesday, October 13th. We will also be giving kids an opportunity to come in during their recess on Sept 17th, Oct 1st, and Oct 8th to work on their entries. We will be showcasing all the entries in our special art exhibit during the Fall Fest on October 22nd.
Watch for further details to be sent home in September.  If you would like to view the program rules and guidelines, view the PTA Reflections Webpage.

Walk/Bike to School Day - Oct. 6
Please join your fellow Pleasant Hill students and millions of other students from all around the world in celebrating this special day by walking or biking to school.  Parents are heartily invited to accompany their children in this event.  Consider organizing a "walking school bus" on your block so that younger kids can walk with older students. Bike helmets are strongly encouraged.
Company Grants
Does your company offer grants to schools? PTA would love to know about it! We are applying for grants to help meet some of the physical and educational enhancements we would all like to see at Pleasant Hill.

If you know of a grant that is open to schools or PTAs or if you just have a question, please e-mail the info to Pat Murakami at patriciamurakami@yahoo.com

 Parent Education-An Interview w/Ms. Quiery
To kick off this year's Parent Ed column, we caught up with Pleasant Hill Reading Specialist Ms. Quiery. Below she answers questions about her work and a few of her favorite things...
P Ed: For starters, how did you end up working at Pleasant Hill and how long have you been here?
MQ: This is my fourth year at PH.  Previously I was a second grade teacher at Central Road for about 10 years.
P Ed: Tell us a little bit about your typical day at Pleasant Hill.
MQ: The PH Reading Room is a busy place.  The Reading Intervention team is constantly instructing students either one-on-one or in a small group.  If I am not teaching, I might be giving assessments to help the classroom teacher get a closer look at the student's reading strengths and weaknesses.  My schedule is jammed packed, but if I have time I may go into a classroom during their literacy block
P Ed: What are the top three things that parents contact you about?
MQ: 1)When their children are reading below grade level
2)Strategies to help their child read more proficiently and
3) How to respond when their children make errors while reading

P Ed: What are the biggest challenges you face at work?
MQ: Scheduling!  Figuring out when to see the students throughout the day is by far my biggest challenge. Coordinating between the teacher's schedule and the other resource teachers is quite a process.  It eventually all works out in the end.  Flexibility is the key!
P Ed: How can families go about using the resources you offer?
MQ: Give me a call or shoot me an email at quierym@ccsd15.net if they have specific questions. Reading Connections Newsletters are helpful to all families regardless of their child's reading level. (P Ed says: Parents    can access these via the PTA website.) I have access to information or will find information to help parents deal with their struggling readers.
P Ed: OK, now the fun questions.
Cubs or Sox? Cubs
Favorite vacation spot? Almost anywhere!
The book you are reading right now?  The Help
Milk chocolate, dark chocolate or no chocolate? Milk chocolate
If I win the lottery tonight I would..........call my parents and tell them to retire and plan on a family vacation to Ireland.
