Principal's Message
Dear Pleasant Hill Families and Friends,
The holiday season is upon us, and while I tend to be a pretty nostalgic guy in general, there's something about the holidays that makes me, and probably most of us, reminisce about the past even more than we normally do. Think about it...Who among us doesn't tell holiday stories about family members who are no longer with us? Who doesn't remember being a kid and trying to stay up all night to see if Santa was going to show up (for me, it was always 50-50 on whether the big guy was coming at all as a result of some very questionable behavior on my part)? Who doesn't share tales of how their father dragged them out of Christmas Eve Mass by their ear just because their new Chewbacca action figure was launched into the candle-scented air with a little too much gusto in the middle of the priest's homily and landed on top the altar? What - am I alone on that one? The point is, our holiday memories tend to be some of the most vivid and important ones we have. They make us laugh, they make us happy, they make us who we are.
And while your children's focus these next few weeks will probably be centered on their most desired toys and gifts, you know as well as I do that in a few years, or even more distressingly - in a few months, they won't remember what it was they even received or much less why they wanted it in the first place. Outside of a few truly spectacular gifts (the Dukes of Hazard Barn-Buster set was AWESOME!!!); I remember a mere fraction of all the "stuff" I received. Instead, when your kids are all grown, they're much more likely to remember frozen fingers and noses from being outside hanging lights. They're more likely to remember decorating cookies with heaps of colored sugar and treats. They're more likely to remember hot chocolate and singing a few carols because music has a way of staying with us for a long time. They're more likely to remember the feeling of their ear being darn-near torn from the side of their head and being terrified that the 50-50 chance of Santa coming had just dropped to 10:1...at best. What...no one else? Alone again on that one apparently.
So in a very clich and over-stated holiday message, but none less true, I wish you all the gift of togetherness. I hope that you have all the time that you want, to do all the things that you want, with all the people that you want. I hope that you get experiences rather than get stuff. I hope that you are blessed with patience so when you overturn a throw-pillow to find a softball-sized hole burned into the upholstery of your sofa ringed with red melted wax from the Christmas candle that you told your son (or daughter) time and time again not to play with, you realize this it's not bad behavior, it's just another holiday memory in the making!
Happy holidays everyone! Be warm, be safe, & be happy!

HOLIDAY SHOP IS COMING
Mark your calendars! The Pleasant Hill PTA's annual Holiday Gift Shop is next week already! Each year, students of Pleasant Hill have the opportunity to do their Holiday shopping for their moms, dads, brothers, sisters, grandparents and friends. The caf is transformed into a holiday gift shop with items priced from $.50 up to $10.00. We ask that parents do accompany the students, but please, no peeking! This year, we will have items for students to preview during lunch on Wednesday, December 8. The actual Holiday Shop event will take place on Thursday, December 9 from 3:20-6:30 p.m. So, students ask for some extra chores and start saving your money! We also could use some additional volunteers to help with the sale on Thursday. If you can help, please contact Kim Dunne kim@dunnefamily.com or Sherri Lamerand sherrilamerand@yahoo.com. Happy Shopping!

Make a Difference This Holiday

The MADC (Make a Difference Club) is collecting socks this holiday season for the homeless. We learned that there are currently 1,600 homeless people in the northwest suburbs. People of all ages are troubled and need help this winter. Please keep them warm by making a small donation. You can drop off sock donations by the Christmas tree in the foyer at Pleasant Hill School between December 3rd -16th. Thank you for your support.
Happy Holidays, Make a Difference Club

Environmental Education
Between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day, Americans throw away a million extra tons of garbage each week, including wrapping paper and product packaging. As you dive into the season in the coming weeks, keep these tips in mind to make your holiday not only more environmentally-friendly but also easier on you and your wallet! Read on . . .
Buy less!Okay! I can definitely get on board with this! Not all gifts have to be store-bought-get creative. Give gifts that can be experienced. When shopping for gifts, opt for those with the least packaging possible.
Think green! Buy recycled-content gifts. Look for locally-made items. Regifting is OKAY!
Holiday lighting! Use LED lighting-it uses less energy, lasts longer, and doesn't get as hot. Put your outside lights on a timer so that they're not on all night long. Don't use as many!
Cards! Send homemade cards-get the kids involved! The amount of cards sold in the U.S. during the holiday season would fill a football field 10 stories high and requires the harvesting of nearly 300,00 trees.
Trees! A live tree outside is the best decorated tree, but let's face it-who's going out in the 20-below weather to enjoy it around here?! So, at the very least, have your real tree made into woodchips to use for landscaping.
Wrapping! Reuse wrapping paper when possible, or use the comics from the newspaper to wrap gifts. If everyone wrapped just 3 gifts in reused wrapping paper or fabric gift bags this year, we'd keep enough paper out of our landfills to cover 45,000 hockey rinks. Yikes!
Check out these websites that will help you carry out a more "green" holiday season . . .

Our child, us, and I: The top three parenting skills
By Mudita Rastogi
What are the most important parenting skills? A study authored by Dr. Robert Epstein, a psychologist who specializes in parenting and stress, reported in the November 2010 issue of the Scientific American Mind found some familiar and some surprising factors. The research involving over 2000 parents found that the top three parenting skills include: 1) Loving your child 2) Maintaining a high quality relationship with your partner 3) Managing your own stress levels well. The first factor seems rather obvious. However it's factors two and three that should give us pause. Paradoxically, the findings suggest that in order to be good parents at times we need to focus away from our children. The strength of the relationship between the parents helps the overall parenting process. In a similar vein, well-known family therapist Dr. William Doherty in his book Take Back Your Marriage recommends that couples intentionally create daily space for themselves in order to not "sacrifice their relationship to their kids." As far as stress goes, you already know that it affects your health. But did you also know that our stress level has a direct link to the quality of parenting we provide? In other words, the way in which we manage the stress in our life mediates the relationship we have with our children. Epstein's study discussed above found that parents who are better at managing their own stress also have children who are overall happier. So, take time off. Take care of your own stress. This in turn will make you a better parent. With the holidays right around the corner, it seems that the two best gifts we can give our children are these: Strengthening the relationship with our partner, and learning to handle our own stress better. Dr. Epstein's work can be read here. This article from a recent issue of Psychology Today explains further details of the findings. This article has been reproduced from http://muditarastogi.com |

Book Fair Heroes
A big thank you to Pleasant Hill's Heroes, Mrs. Radochonski, Mrs. Schmit, Mrs. Pankratz, and Mrs. Farrahar for all their hard work in sponsoring our Book Fair. One hundred and seventy two books were taken directly from the book fair, and added to our school collection and another sixty nine more books were ordered through the
Scholastic Book Fair Catalog. The rug pictured above will be gracing our resource center as well as two new student loungers. Our resource center has become an inviting environment for our students largely due to the dedication of our book fair committee. The additional profits from the book fair will be used to purchase new books as they are released. I would also like to thank all the other parents who volunteered and helped make our book fair such a huge success.

Boxtops & More . . . .
We are having a "soup label" contest to try and earn our 1,000 label bonus! Remember, it's NOT JUST SOUP anymore-check out all the new products that qualify as "soup labels" at www.labelsforeducation.com. Submit them all by December 10th and your classroom may win popsicles for the entire class! What a wonderful frosty treat for the winter! Our Boxtops collection has been fabulous, but what are we going to do with that money? How about a CLIMBING WALL!!!??!! Our Boxtops earnings will be combined with a grant to help Pleasant Hill get this piece of exercise equipment installed at our school. So, don't hoard those little labels at home-get them in! The more we collect, the faster we get this wall!! Chris Howard-Menk, howardmenk@comcast.net
